Winter break is always a good time to catch up on sleep, hang out with family, and relax, but for those students who enjoy having something to keep them busy, we have some teacher recommended entertainment for this holiday season.

Mr. Woodard recommends Netflix’s in-house series, Daredevil. The show follows the blind vigilante Matt Murdock, a New York attorney by day and a hero by night. Mr. Woodard recommends the show because its “sophisticated writing and really subtle fidelity to the original Daredevil myth distinguish this as an excellent updating of a long-time favorite of the superhero genre.” Mr. Woodard also says that this show, while faithful to the original, is “accessible to people who who wouldn’t normally see themselves as ‘capes and tights’ fans.” The entire first season of Daredevil is available on Netflix for binge-watching this break.

The young adult novel I’ll Give You the Sun, by Jandy Nelson, is Ms. Zindulis’ recommended reading for the winter break. She says that “students would like it because it has a lot of John Green elements, but it’s even more exciting and well-written than a John Green book.” I’ll Give You the Sun centers on a fearless leading lady, Jude, and her relationship with her twin brother, Noah. The novel has elements of both romance and mystery; there’s something in it for everyone.

If historical fiction is more your taste, Dr. Cavey has given his seal of approval to the show Vikings, which is extremely hard to concisely summarize. (Think Game of Thrones vibe but with more sea travel, some Beowulf themes, and less magic.) Dr. Cavey notes that while not all plot lines are entirely historically accurate, “the set design, [and] costumes are wonderfully accurate, the mythology is really gripping, and it’s got good cliffhangers!” Vikings airs on the History channel, and the first three seasons are available on Hulu for subscribers.
Enjoy!
