Have you ever stopped and realized how many siblings are scattered all over Stone Ridge? Well in the Upper School alone, there are more than 50 girls who have a sister who attends Stone Ridge, according to a survey sent to Upper School students. Sisters are not always easy, but as siblings get older they usually begin to get along a lot better, at least that’s what parents say. Whenever sisters fight, there’s normally the chorus of, “one day you guys are going to realize that the girl you are fighting will be your best friend.”

I don’t know about other siblings, but in my family there is a lot of competition between sisters. Not about academics necessarily but in sports. Thank God we do not play the same sports! Having another sibling at the same school can be hard. In some cases there can be competition between sisters in sports, sometimes in academics, seeing who can get the better grades. Being the younger sister can be especially hard because it seems some people expect you to be like your older sister, whether that be good or bad.

Caroline Barry, ’19, whose sister, Erin Barry, ’17, has been at Stone Ridge since freshman year, says that “she [feels] pressure because Erin is always the favorite one of her teachers, and so it is sort of daunting sometimes.”

But Barry, ’17, thinks “we have become so much closer now that we go to the same school. We drive to school together, we play on the same Stone Ridge soccer team, and we see each other every day.”

So what is the takeaway of having a sister at Stone Ridge according to Barry, ’17? “Being together in more of a social sense rather than a just in a family environment has definitely helped our friendship evolve for the better.”
